Natural Reservoir Restoration

All reservoirs need to be maintained, and the water quality needs to improve in many of them. Blue-green algae, manganese, iron, organic carbon are all problems that can cause a variety of issues ranging from adverse effects on clothes during laundering to cancer production by trihalomethanes.

Odor and horrible taste in drinking water has plagued citizens around the world for years. Black coloration often stains residents’ clothing during laundering no matter how many times they wash it due to manganese, blue-green algae, or iron found in reservoir water. People are turning more towards bottled sources of clean drinking water because normal treatments cannot fix these problems, such as boiling or filtering with sand filters or carbon filtration systems alone. Reservoir restoration processes that reduce contamination can help improve reservoir quality.

The Process

Environmental Waterway Restoration has several solutions for improving water quality in reservoirs, including their Continuous Laminar Flow Inversion and Oxygenation Systems. The system uses continuous aeration to bring up clean water from the bottom without creating turbulence that could negatively affect other aspects of reservoir management.

EWR’s systems have been installed into many reservoirs worldwide with positive results immediately after installation and over time: within weeks, transparency improves, iron levels drop sharply, taste/odor issues are solved; this is all due to improved oxygen saturation levels.

The inversion system gently turns reservoir water over, bringing the foul-smelling gases up to be neutralized by our atmosphere. The air then takes oxygenated surface water down at a pace that will kill bacteria and algae on the bottom of your reservoir.

The harmful blue-green algae grown on the surface is taken to the bottom where it cannot grow due to lack of sunlight—finally, oxygenating the entire reservoir - iron and manganese that causes the discoloration of clothing, sinks, and baths-is oxidized and deposited on the reservoir bottom.

Environmental Waterway Restoration’s Oxygenation Methods

Both oxidized manganese and oxidized iron become useful in binding the nitrogen and phosphorus to the bottom sediment, making it unavailable for algal growth.

In order to make the water in reservoirs better for humans and animals, it is possible to use methods that are less costly than restoration work. For example, you can supplement aeration systems with naturally buffered phosphate precipitants or add beneficial bacteria which feed on dead tree leaves and wastes that wash into a reservoir.
